July (YANG Zhiyan), performance maker, member of _ao_ao_ing ensemble, and a picky foodie from Suzhou. Their practices usually operates through site-specific performance / participation / actions / sound walks, reflecting on embodied daily experience with interests in the critical potential of food, liminal space created by sound, and alternative perspectives.
Their food related works include the "Viscera Arcana" series and various workshops, interactive installation “g’Gºu&U~u-t.T*s (guts),” audio-guided parody meditation "A Morning with MSG," and early exploration with the "Foodslaughter" series. Their audio walk works include “Beijing City Park Strolling Project” (with Chen Ran, Goethe-Institut East Asia Regional Project 2023) and “Here They Wu-er” (with _ao_ao_ing ensemble, Shanghai Biennale City Project 2018).
During their stay at Rote Fabrik, July will conduct an artistic research to explore each of us as multitude through the lens of food. Working from their own encounter with food with a food diary, they will develop recipes and rituals for the invisible f/actors that constitutes and coexist with me, to be in the chiasm to challenge homocentrism with food magic: When I eat, I am never alone--food penetrates my boundary and connects me flesh to flesh with the universe, rendering the singular “me” into the plural “we”.
