Lois Alexander

Choreography, Performance, Film, Teaching

Berlin, Germany

Artist in Residence at Rote Fabrik from July to September 2022

At the center of Lois Alexander’s artistic practice is dance, along with the body’s necessity to transform, refigure and embody pluralistic identities.

Lois is a choreographer and dancer living in Berlin, Germany. She graduated from The Juilliard School with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Dance in 2014 and worked in traditional German state theater before creating her own work in the independent free theater scene in Amsterdam and Berlin.
In 2020, she presented her first solo Neptune, which was selected by Aerowaves 2021 and toured internationally. Through the intersection of dance, visual art and sound, Neptune creates a universe that triggers the imagination to form new modes of existence.
In 2021, Lois started incorporating film and video in her artistic practice. Yeye is a hybrid dance performance and film that explores Afro Diasporic spirituality through the iconography of the Black Madonna. The work is similarly investigating the afterlife of slavery and the reverberations on our present. Influenced by Toni Morrison’s writing style and drawing on memory, origin, and belonging, Lois creates her own language of blending personal narrative and historicity.
In April 2022, Lois went to Lagos, Nigeria to get in touch with her West African ancestry in the frame of a research trip and artistic project called Bodies of Water.

During the residency in Rote Fabrik Lois will be integrating impulses from her recent trip to Lagos as well as opening up to new perspectives that Zürich will offer.
Furthermore, Lois will develop the stage performance of Yeye by deepening and expanding upon the film that she created last year in a corporeal and performative realm.
